Best of Atlanta 2023: Drink
Our 2023 Best of Atlanta picks for all things beverage-related—here's where you'll find great cocktails, coffee, tea, wine, bitters, and more.
Atlanta’s top-shelf new cocktail spots
The 1970s are back, and not just the rampant inflation. (Hey-o!) Also, crucially: the vibes. And the booze. In 2021, Colony Square welcomed the groovy disco-era cocktail lounge JoJo’s Beloved, and this year it’s joined in Midtown by the Waiting Room. The latter is from the folks behind the restaurant Bon Ton; in fact, it’s above Bon Ton, a second-floor redoubt in the eye-catching pink building on Myrtle Street. Decorated in red and pink shag, and boasting DJs and live music—even a piano—the Waiting Room was designed to have a warm, grown-up feel.
Review: Spend a very happy hour at Whoopsie’s
Take me to a minuscule bar with clever low-budget decor, shove a one-page menu under my nose that doesn’t look like typical pub fare, and I am sure to fall in love before even tasting anything. Whoopsie’s, recently opened in Reynoldstown, checks all the boxes, playful and serious in equal proportion: a sparse 40 seats, lots of thrift-store finds and reclaimed furniture, lights turned way down low.
Long Snake wine bar, from 8Arm’s former beverage director, searches for its permanent home
Joshua Fryer is passionate about food and wine. Although most Atlantans know him as a front-of-house guy—he served as general manager and beverage director at 8Arm—Fryer graduated from culinary school and worked in kitchens prior to finding a home behind the bar. By founding Long Snake wine bar, Fryer is revisiting his original passion, serving a tight menu (primarily small plates) and Lo-Fi wines, with vinyl playing in the background.
The verdict on 3 new Atlanta restaurants: Bona Fide Deluxe, Humble Pie, and Whoopsie’s
A bona fide delight in Edgewood, fancy pizza on the Westside, and a top-shelf cocktail bar with food to match in Reynoldstown.
