Atlanta Magazine’s August 2023 Issue

A note from Sean McGinnis, President & Publisher:

When people think of Georgia, they may think of the vast farmlands and, of course, the industrial city of Atlanta. However, many of the state’s natural wonders are held within its islands. Georgia’s coastline has more than a dozen islands and 400,000 acres of salt marsh. It is home to 71 priority animal species and 91 high-priority plant species. Our August issue will take you deep within the enchanted islands of Georgia where you can discover the natural wonders and wild spaces this corner of the state has to offer.
The shock and horror of Lashawn Thompson’s death last fall only scratch the surface of the Fulton County Jail’s problems. Daily assaults and 15 in-custody deaths last year made the jail one of the deadliest in the country. Figures released by the sheriff last year show that the facility averages more than one stabbing a day. The jail is overcrowded and suffers from disrepair exacerbated by staffing problems. Here, an in-depth look at what is happening inside the Rice Street facility.
“Baltimore Block,” built in 1885, was home to socialites, bohemians, and at least one parakeet. Incredibly, some of the buildings are still standing. In this issue, we explore the history and preservation of the 14 remarkable three-story brick rowhouses in Midtown that highlight the best of Atlanta’s urban history.
Whether you’re visiting Atlanta or live here, the BeltLine holds an irresistible draw. Though still under construction, the 22-mile path is reconnecting 45 neighborhoods, and along the way, building a vibrant public space for expression, recreation, and commerce. In this special section of our August issue, find out how you can experience four sections of the BetlLine, participate in its amazing programs, and meet real people behind BeltLine businesses.
