A note from Sean McGinnis, President & Publisher:
Our May issue is dedicated to Atlanta’s vibrant Caribbean culture. Officially 85,000 Caribbeans live in metro Atlanta, however, these cultural ties to the city have gone unknown by many. Caribbean culture and heritage manifest itself in Atlanta’s food, music, festivals, and the very people that make up this multicultural city. In this issue, we hope to give the stories of Caribbean Atlantans a well-deserved spotlight and encourage others to learn more about this beautiful culture in Atlanta.
Many have heard of Carnival, with its ornate costumes, parades, and street dancing. Carnival originally derived from pre-Lenten celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago, but there are many iterations of it worldwide. In Atlanta, Carnival takes place over Memorial Day weekend. This issue will dive into the history of Carnival and the various ways it is celebrated. Want to get in on the festivities? We have also laid out a step-by-step guide for how you can get involved in this exciting expression of Caribbean culture.
Caribbean cuisine has deep roots within the Atlanta dining scene. However, many may not know that the delicious dish they are enjoying has Caribbean origins. Beloved dishes such as rice and beans as well as jerked meats are symbols of resilience and generational bonds within Caribbean cultures. We invite you to learn more about the history, and the misconceptions, of various Caribbean dishes. Also, make sure to keep an eye out for our recommendations on where to find these tasty options in Atlanta. You may just find your new favorite Caribbean food spot.
Finally, be sure to peruse through our Summer Fun Guide. Summer is upon us and now is the time to get a jump on your plans for the best season yet. Our selection of events, attractions, and things to do in Atlanta will spark some ideas for summer activities.
