Atlanta Magazine’s HOME is pleased to introduce the 2019 Modern Style Showhome, located in Buckhead just minutes from Chastain Park. Showcasing the latest trends and newest ideas in modern design, this cutting-edge home will spark inspiration featuring work by Atlanta’s top designers.

The 2019 Modern Style Showhome is one of 10 homes available for touring during the MA! Architecture Tour, which is part of the Atlanta Design Festival. By purchasing a ticket to the festival, you are granted 2-day access to the full tour.

ABOUT THE RESIDENTIAL DESIGNER
Founded in 2007 by Rodolfo Castro, Castro Design Studio, LLC is a full-service boutique residential design firm based in Atlanta, Georgia. The firm focuses on the planning and design of custom, high-end residences and vacation homes. Their projects include new houses, additions, restorations, and renovations.
Castro Design Studio, LLC believes that a house is to be lived in and enjoyed, not simply admired. It is the people in the house that give it life. While their work draws inspiration from the traditional and classical architecture of the area as well as from the client’s own ideas, their design is not necessarily defined by any particular style. Traditional and Modern elements are often comfortably combined creating work that is both timeless and current while respecting the project’s site and context.
ABOUT THE BUILDER
Founded in 2004, Tate Builders & Associates, Inc. and set out to change the experience of building a custom home. In the past 14 years, they’ve built custom primary and secondary residences and are honored to have worked alongside a long list of satisfied homeowners, architects, developers and investors.
Tate Builders is known for enduring quality, beauty and an impeccable sense of detail. They have a transparent approach to their operations and it’s the way they’ve run their business for years. While always keeping their client’s best interest in mind, Steve and Emily Tate treat each home as if it was theirs and vows to provide clients with choices as well as an honest recommendation. Building a new home is one of the most time-consuming and expensive undertakings that a person will have in their lifetime. Tate Builders believes that it should be one of the most rewarding, as well.
ABOUT THE LEAD DESIGNER
j witzel interior design is a full-service interiors firm specializing in modern, yet approachable, designs that reflect each client’s individual style and spirit. With fifteen years of design experience, principal designer and company founder Julie Witzel offers an approach that pays special attention to the balance, scale and light of an interior space. Knowing that creating a home is an intensely personal process, Witzel strives for excellence in every detail of the project.
With a focus on residential and boutique public spaces, the portfolio of j witzel interior design includes projects in Georgia, Tennessee, Montana, Alabama, Maine, Ohio, Chicago and St. Louis. Her work includes office and art gallery spaces, restaurants and a recreational ranch lodge, as well as luxury residences and vacation homes. Witzel’s ability to listen to a client’s desires and translate them into a sophisticated and functional composition allows her unique talents to be relevant in any type of assignment. As a designer, Witzel gains her inspiration from the world around us and has a strong affinity for science and nature. This has enabled her to develop a unique approach to design that is not only artistically based, but also exceptionally analytical. In 2009, Witzel became certified by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification and has been featured in numerous publications including: Atlanta Magazine HOME, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Modern Luxury Interiors, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, American Craft Magazine, ASID InDesign, and has received Best of Houzz Awards in 2013, 2015 and 2018. She has also been featured in the Modern Atlanta Architectural Tours (now the Atlanta Design Festival) in years 2012, 2015 and 2018.
ABOUT THE DESIGN TEAM
PANTRY, MASTER SUITE CLOSET, AND STUDY CLOSET: The Container Store
The Container Store, under the direction of Atlanta-based Custom Closets Manager Sean Arther, took on the pantry and two of the home’s closets, configuring storage solutions that are functional, versatile, and fun. “Organization should make life easier and happier,” Arther says.
MASTER BEDROOM, BATH: Robert Grayson and Andrew Harris of GraysonHarris Interiors + Design
For design duo Robert Grayson and Andrew Harris, the master suite should be a place where homeowners can escape and unwind. “We wanted the room to be luxurious, yet still feel edited and clean,” says Grayson. “At the end of the day, you want to relax in a space that’s timeless and uncluttered.”
FIRST UPSTAIRS BEDROOM, BATHROOM, AND LAUNDRY ROOM: Mallori Hamilton of Wakefield Beasley Interiors
For the home’s new upstairs bedroom and bath, Mallori Hamilton, specialty studio director at Wakefield Beasley Interiors in Alpharetta, envisioned minimalist and modern spaces with a Scandinavian vibe. In the adjacent laundry room, she decided to have a little fun with a bold wallcovering in high-contrast black and white.
KITCHEN AND BREAKFAST ROOM: Kingdom Woodworks
Atlanta-based kitchen designer Marcel Olariu, principal of Kingdom Woodworks, blended style and function to create a cutting edge kitchen that’s also warm and inviting. “I wanted the kitchen to reflect the home’s minimalist style, but I didn’t want it to look sterile,” he says.
DECK: Kolo Collection
The home’s deck, which spans the width of the family room, dining room, and kitchen, is ideal for alfresco dining and lounging. Kolo Collection co-owners Greg Martin and Michelle Larrabee-Martin capitalized on the space to create a serene and comfortable environment where the homeowners can relax and enjoy a cocktail or dinner. The couple prefer an eclectic approach, mixing vendors to create a visually interesting composition
SECOND UPSTAIRS BEDROOM, BATHROOM, AND PORCH: Beth Kooby Sobbott of Beth Kooby Design
For the second upstairs bedroom, Beth Kooby Sobbott envisioned a room for a teenage girl who loves the outdoors. In fact, it’s Sobbott who appreciates nature, and she incorporates it into her designs whenever possible. The adjoining porch overlooks the pool and back yard, and Sobbott wanted to capitalize on the view.
STUDY AND ADJACENT BATHROOM: Katja Lauterbach of Duett Design
Katja Lauterbach, owner of Duett Design in Dunwoody, brings a global vision to every project she undertakes. Born and raised in Germany, her work is strongly influenced by her European heritage and travels. For the home’s study, Lauterbach was inspired by her love of Scandinavian design. “I like its clean lines and simple profiles, and the philosophy of purposeful placement of items."
SITTING ROOM: Roche Bobois
When Michael Jeffrey, design consultant at Roche Bobois, first walked into the home’s sitting room, he knew he had to create a space that paid homage to nature as well as to the communal quality of the room itself. “I was immediately taken by the beautiful view of the woods,” he says. “The enormous floor-to-ceilings windows really showcase the outdoors.”
POWDER ROOM AND MUDROOM/LAUNDRY: Kerry Jemison Weinheimer of Jemison Design, LLC
Kerry Jemison Weinheimer got her inspiration for the home’s powder room from a swatch of wallpaper. Its light gray background and delicate hand drawn birds set just the right tone for the small space. She also kept the mudroom/ laundry pared down and unfussy with practical storage alongside pillows and artwork that add color and interest.
FIRST BEDROOM: Justin Q. Williams of Trademark Design Co.
Justin Q. Williams, founder of Trademark Design Co., wanted his bedroom to be a masculine yet welcoming space. He uses a geometric rug, plush upholstery, and deep rich colors to evoke that feeling. He also incorporates a mix of metals to keep things from looking too matchy and adds oversized artwork to inject excitement and color into the space.
LIVING ROOM AND DINING ROOM: Julie Witzel of j witzel interior design
The concept of dissimilarity inspired Julie Witzel as she designed the home’s living room and dining room. “I wanted to explore variations in color, texture, and style,” she says. The sofa, which blends classic and modern design, is upholstered in a plush cotton velvet; two lounge chairs feature walnut frames, leather backs, and thick cushions; and the dining room rug offers a study in contrasts.
INDOOR & OUTDOOR PLANTERS: Jennifer Rust of Jennifer Rust Botanicals
Jennifer worked with the designers to understand each space and how plants could add both a natural and clean accent, inside and out. Jennifer felt the design of the house called for containers that had both simple lines with uncomplicated plant arrangements and interesting texture. For the front entrance, she used containers filled with plants to be both cool and welcoming as guests approach the front door, while the sun-filled deck includes plants that stand up to Atlanta's heat.
